Google Ads search partners: check lead quality before switching them off
Compare search-partner spend, qualified leads and sales lag. Use a worked cost example and a decision checklist before changing your Search campaign settings.

Do not keep or disable Google search partners just because their clicks are cheaper. First separate network traffic, align the conversion definition and check what happened after the enquiry. This guide produces a short decision record for an existing Search campaign; it is not a rule that every advertiser should exclude partners.
1. Record the campaign and its network scope
Start with one Search campaign. Save its name, dates, current Networks settings and the question you are investigating. Google's Search Network guide explains partner eligibility and campaign-level inclusion controls. Partner inventory is not identical to Google Search, and this workflow should not be copied into Performance Max as if its controls were the same.
Write a hypothesis such as “Partner enquiries cost less to generate but may be less suitable for our service.” Keep it a question until the evidence supports it. Record whether the concern is irrelevant enquiries, missing sales feedback or genuine business cost.
2. Separate the network rows
In the relevant campaign statistics table, open Segment and choose Network (with search partners). Google's segmentation documentation describes this split. Save cost, clicks and the conversion columns you actually use, with the same dates and currency. Check campaign and conversion-action filters before comparing rows.
A blank or incompatible metric is not zero. Do not assume a search-term report is a complete website-placement list. Use the network split to answer the network question and the separate search-term review for the query question.
3. Compare the same business outcome
Agree what qualifies an enquiry: for example, a relevant service need in your delivery area with usable contact details. A submitted form, qualified enquiry and signed customer are separate stages. Google's qualified and converted lead guide explains using offline lead progression in measurement.
Only use network-specific qualified outcomes when your reporting or validated CRM linkage actually supports that assignment. If it does not, mark the column unknown; do not allocate all CRM sales in proportion to clicks. The CRM integration guide covers the wider connection, while the conversion-delay guide helps align reporting maturity.
4. Work through this hypothetical comparison
These are fictional completed-period figures, not CPCInsider results, prices or benchmarks. Both rows use the same qualification rule and review window.
| Network | Spend | Submitted forms | Qualified enquiries | Cost per form | Cost per qualified enquiry |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Search | €900 | 30 | 15 | €30 | €60 |
| Search partners | €300 | 20 | 3 | €15 | €100 |
Partner cost per form is €300 / 20 = €15; cost per qualified enquiry is €300 / 3 = €100. The cheaper form is therefore not the cheaper qualified opportunity in this example. It still does not prove incremental sales, profit or that every partner placement behaves alike. With only three qualified enquiries, uncertainty remains large.
If qualification is delayed or inconsistently completed, resolve that measurement gap before treating the comparison as settled. Also check whether both groups received equivalent follow-up; poor contact handling can look like poor advertising.
5. Choose a bounded next step
| Finding | Next step | Evidence to retain |
|---|---|---|
| Qualification unavailable | Repair the reporting link first | Outcome definition and missing records |
| Lower form cost but uncertain quality | Extend a defined observation window | Mature cohort and follow-up status |
| Material, repeatable quality concern | Propose a network-setting change | Baseline, reason, owner and reversal rule |
| Useful qualified demand at acceptable cost | Keep monitoring | Cost and business outcomes together |
For an approved Search campaign change, use the Networks control described in Google's guide and verify the saved state. Keep unrelated bid, offer and landing-page changes separate. Recheck after a pre-agreed window that allows sales follow-up; there is no universal number of days that makes a small sample reliable. A before-and-after result alone is not a randomized experiment. Use the experiment brief when a suitable supported design is needed.
Finish with a decision record
Save campaign, network setting, dates, conversion action, qualification definition, cost, mature outcomes, unresolved gaps, owner and next review. Choose keep, investigate or change with a reason. Avoid deciding from CPC alone or labelling an entire network fraudulent from a few unsuitable enquiries.
